Job Introduction

The BBC is making the shift from being a broadcaster that speaks to our audiences to being a service that is shaped by them and designed around their wants and needs whilst stimulating and delighting audiences around the world. To achieve this mission of being a Digital First BBC, we are building a data organisation which will lead cultural and organisational change. This includes transitioning the BBC to a data product organisation, evolving our data architecture and embedding data capabilities company wide. To help us progress along that journey, the recently created Data Governance function plays a crucial part.

When you join the BBC as a Data Governance Manager, you join a culture of purpose and belonging – quality is at the heart of everything we do. Our aim is to guide the organisation into best practise that ensures our data is well managed, safe and discoverable. As such we are very much part of the organisation, not on the outside looking in.

The Metadata focussed Data Governance Manager will have the opportunity to connect with a wealth of varied technologies, and a huge variety of departments and individuals. Your skill in understanding how to translate data governance requirements into technical solutions and processes will be right at the heart of making the BBC’s data more discoverable, governable and usable than ever before.

Main responsibilities

No two days will be the same. You will be working with the data governance team to develop best practise advice, policies, frameworks and standards; that’s a big part of what we do as a team. More specifically though, as a metadata focussed Data Governance Manager you will be working with the rest of the team, and technical colleagues to ensure that the best practise we advocate is brought to life through the technical solutions and organisational processes we create and manage.

You will be heavily involved in implementing and managing the BBC’s Enterprise Data Catalogue; working with engineers and architects to ensure that the solution connects where it needs to, ingests what it should, enriches with metadata in the most efficient and useful way, and displays all of that back to a consumer in a way that they can understand and utilise.

Specifically, you will be responsible for these activities:

  • Collaborating closely with business and technical teams in order to implement and promote metadata management related tooling and processes including a Data Catalogue with automated and manual tagging, a pan BBC Business Glossary and exhaustive Data Lineage.
  • Working with the rest of the Data Governance Team and stakeholders in the business to drive the quality and usage of the BBC’s Data Catalogue as a source of rich and enabling information about our data, ensuring it remains a relevant accelerator to insight.
  • Maintaining a roadmap for and carrying out regular audits of all aspects of captured metadata to ensure that quality reaches and maintains the required standard; ensure compliance, address potential issues, and enhance data quality.
  • Collaborating with Platform teams to ensure data governance principles are integrated into data systems, applications, and infrastructure.
  • regular data and data catalogue audits to ensure compliance, address potential issues, and enhance data quality.
  • Promote data governance disciplines and culture internally, educating the business on analytics, reporting, data management, and data quality.
  • Support the expansion of data tools, reporting, and knowledge sharing to democratise data across the company.
Are you the right candidate

Some of the things that we would love to see in candidates for this role:

  • Significant experience in a data governance role within a large organisation-preferably having been part of a digital transformation programme where you have been close to the technical solutions.
  • Familiarity with implementing and/or using, managing and promoting a Data Cataloguing solution
  • Familiarity with utilising API functionality to populate metadata within a data catalogue, especially through the use of YAML or similar files generated as part of a data pipeline.
  • Familiarity with Data Mesh principles and ways of working; specifically with how Data Governance is managed with a Data Mesh implementation and a federated data governance approach.
  • Familiarity with the use of DBT, Airflow and similar transformation and orchestration tools.
  • Familiarity with modern metadata capture concepts such as “Shifting Left” to ensure that metadata is captured efficiently and without undue impact on workflows.
  • Familiarity with utilising API functionality to populate metadata within a data catalogue, especially through the use of YAML or similar files generated as part of a data pipeline.
