The Maxwell Library at Bridgewater State University seeks an innovative, service-oriented Digital Services Librarian to develop, coordinate, and manage the Library’s digital collections, institutional repository, and related digital projects. The successful candidate will be a member of the Library Systems Department and will work closely with faculty and staff throughout the Library and University, particularly University Archives & Special Collections, the Electronic Resources & Collections Services Department, and Information Technology.

The Digital Services Librarian investigates, evaluates, and recommends appropriate digital content for inclusion, including but not limited to images, data sets, audio, video, and other materials that support library services, teaching, learning, research, and creative activities as well as the tools to enhance digital content creation. In addition, the Digital Services Librarian may supervise Library Assistants, Graduate Assistants, and student workers.

The Digital Services Librarian reports directly to the Dean of the Library. The incumbent will serve as a library liaison in selected disciplines. Participation in professional organizations, service in library and university governance, and appropriate professional development activities are expected and required for tenure.

The Digital Services Librarian will

  • Oversee library digital publishing initiatives, including e-journals, theses, and other university digital content.
  • Administer the institutional repository (BePress Digital Commons).
  • Establish and maintain effective working relations with academic departments and faculty engaged in digital projects.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity and understanding of students and colleagues from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
  • Develop workflows and provide oversight of processing, description, publication, and long-term preservation of digital materials.
  • Collaborate with the Emerging Technologies & Systems Librarian to develop and manage the Library Website.
  • Supervise student workers involved in digital services projects.
  • Collaborate with the Electronic Resources & Collections Services Department to create descriptive metadata utilizing national standards and best practices to optimize discovery.
  • Serve as a library liaison in selected disciplines.
  • Collaborate with the Reference Department and departmental liaisons to market and promote digital services and content.
  • Collaborate with Archives & Special Collections to make historical materials available digitally in innovative ways, including creating online exhibits.
  • In consultation with the Dean and the Library Program Area, create and maintain policies and procedures guiding digital storage and preservation practices, including workflows for born-digital and digitized content.
  • Provide written reports, assessments, analyses, and documentation as needed and upon request.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications     

  • Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA accredited program.
  • Relevant experience in an academic, large public, special library, or in a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience using a wide variety of platforms, applications, hardware, software, and programming languages.
  • Experience using institutional repositories and/or other digital asset management systems.
  • Experience using a variety of metadata schema and file formats.
  • Commitment to customer service excellence/support to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of various research methodologies.
  • Ability to adapt quickly in a dynamic, evolving library and campus environment.
  • Ability to think strategically, set priorities, and manage responsibilities independently.
  • Evidence of ability to successfully engage in professional activities and disciplinary scholarship to satisfy promotion and tenure requirements of the Massachusetts State College Association (MSCA) contract. http://mscaunion.org/contract/.
Preferred Qualifications     

  • Second master’s degree. (Required for promotion beyond associate librarian rank.)
  • At least two years relevant experience in an academic or research library.
  • Experience using Digital Commons and/or other repository platforms, tools, and products.
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects.
  • Experience with UX design and various assessment methodologies.
  • Understanding of networks, server administration, and other technologies including but not limited to cloud-based tools and platforms.
