Reporting to the Data Services and Digital Production Manager, the post holder will be responsible with colleagues for the cataloguing, classification, and subject indexing of all materials acquired, produced or curated by the library in both print and electronic formats.

We are particularly looking for someone who is proficient in both book-in-hand cataloguing as well as the management of bulk eResource metadata using a combination of vendor MARC records and knowledgebase records. Applicants should have experience of working with a range of cataloguing standards particularly RDA and be familiar with applying Library of Congress subject headings and classification.

You should be self-motivated and able to work on your own initiative with strong IT skills and an understanding and enthusiasm for metadata work. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

JOB DESCRIPTION

To provide high quality metadata through specialist skills, allowing users to find and access the library’s collections and other information resources in all formats, locally and worldwide, in support of the University’s teaching and research missions.

To take responsibility for metadata added to the library catalogue, digital collection management software, institutional repository, and other relevant tools.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1.Create bibliographic and/or metadata records, as appropriate for library materials of all formats by carrying out original metadata creation and/or editing and expanding existing records, in accordance with internationally-recognised metadata and data management schemes and protocols.

2.Assign shelf marks and subject headings using international and locally developed classification and subject schemes.

3.Carry out name authority checking to ensure accuracy and consistency of forms of names on the Library’s bibliographic database, digital collections, and institutional repository, so that the effectiveness of users’ searching and retrieval is optimised.

4.Evaluate and quality-check bibliographic and/or metadata records in external online databases prior to selection and download so that the integrity and currency of local databases are maintained.

5.As required, train and offer continuing support and expertise to staff who create metadata across the organisation.

6.Develop and document local metadata policies and procedures in response to revisions in national/international rules, protocols and practices and ensure that those who are involved in metadata creation are trained in, understand and apply techniques and changes.

7.Up-skill regularly to properly employ and exploit new and emerging data management methods and techniques, including using the technical capability of the library management system, digital collection management software, and institutional repository software to meet developing needs, and to produce appropriate statistical information.

8.As required, undertake any other duties commensurate with the post (including project work)
