The Opportunity
We have an excellent opportunity for a Metadata and Workflow Product Developer Lead for our MalariaGEN project, part of the Parasites and Microbes Team at the Sanger Institute, one of the premier centre of genomic discovery and understanding in the world.
About the Project
The team was recently awarded funding by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation with the primary outcome of malaria control programs and policymakers using genetic data, integrated with epidemiological data, to make more informed decisions. To achieve this outcome we need to operationalise our leading malaria genomics research to create a set of open software products that underpin a surveillance service generating curated malaria genetic, epidemiological data in near real time.
Our work to date has prototyped all of the necessary tools to develop an initial set of pipelines and analysis tools that create both curated analysis ready genetic data and curated analysis ready epidemiology data. However, to enable operation at scale, these tools need to be re-engineered to professional commercial software standards.
About the Role
The Metadata and Workflow product developer Lead will work in close collaboration with the MalariaGEN Product Manager and the leadership team to develop a series of software products, aligned with the product roadmap and high- level architecture. The software products will manage and track each sample, its metadata and provenance throughout the sample’s lifecycle, including analysis, enabling fully curated data, sample tracking and automated service delivery KPIs. The Metadata and Workflow product developer lead will be responsible for a small team and managing a £2.5 million budget. The most complex aspect of this role will be to develop toolsets that manage and integrate metadata for a range of different operational use cases.
About You
You will have significant experience in developing and building workflow systems that capture, verify and maintain field generated metadata and integrate with a range of disparate systems in an environment where data governance is essential. You must have experience of managing, developing and coaching a team and the ability to work and adapt in a frequently changing environment. A strategic thinker with good interpersonal and influencing skills will be required as this role will involve working with various stakeholders of all levels.
Essential Skills
- Significant experience in building workflow systems that integrate with (transfer and receive data) a range of disparate systems in an environment where data provenance is essential
- Experience in developing systems that capture, verify and maintain field generated metadata
- Experience of developing software for deployment in cloud environments
- Experience of managing a team and coaching and developing staff
- Good interpersonal skills
- Possess persuasive negotiation skills and the ability to lead over a continuum of stakeholders at varying levels
- Ability to quickly understand scientific, technical and process challenges and break down complex problems into actionable steps
- Ability to work in a frequently changing environment with the capability to interpret management information to amend plans
- Ability to prioritise, manage workload, and deliver agreed activities consistently on time
- Strategic thinking, ability to see the ‘bigger picture’
- Track record of delivering results quickly
- Experience with Agile development methods
- Experience with facilitating teams to identify process improvement and celebrate great team working.
Ideal Skills
