Featured Job: Taxonomist and Browse Developer – 23rd October 2020


This week’s highlighted job is for a Taxonomist and Browse Developer with online retailer Amazon.  Although the position is advertised as being in Seattle, there are similar positions available in Germany, Dublin and Japan.  Responsible for building world-class taxonomy and ontology structures to optimize product discovery, the position will also involve influencing and informing business partners and technical teams on related taxonomy and metadata solutions.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Develop taxonomy data models to organize our extensive product selection for customers on all Amazon sites
  • Coordinate cross-functional projects with a broad range of technical and non-technical teams
  • Train and develop peers in improving taxonomy design and implementation challenges
  • Support the continuous expansion of data retrieval techniques to utilize our extensive product catalog and make sure products end up in the right place for our customers
  • Analyze website metrics and customer’s browsing activities to make intelligent decisions on optimizing our taxonomy structures globally
  • Work with global team of taxonomists to significantly contribute to process and site improvement efforts

Basic Qualifications:

  • Degree in Library Science, Information Systems, Linguistics or equivalent professional experience
  • 3+ years of relevant work experience
  • Proven skills in data retrieval and data research techniques
  • Experience in taxonomy and/or ontology development
  • Passionate about website usability with great instincts for improving customer shopping experience
  • Ability to quickly understand complex processes and communicate them in simple language
  • Detail-oriented problem solver who is able to work in fast-changing environment and manage ambiguity
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent English language skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library Science, Information Systems or Linguistics
  • Proficiency in SQL
  • Understanding of E-Commerce systems
  • Additional language skills, e.g. Dutch or Turkish
