As a visual media producer, you bring photography and videography production expertise, creativity, excellent customer service skills, and a passion for storytelling and branding to the team. As the primary photo/video specialist for Georgian, you can operate solo in an in-the-moment, self-directed manner during pre-production, shooting and post-production activities. You also enjoy the collaboration of working closely with an integrated marketing and communications team to strategize and package your work to share in publications, web, advertisements, social media and other products.

You’ll produce and catalogue a variety of videos and photos that document the college’s activities and milestones, as well as its unique programming and value propositions, all with an overarching goal of supporting the college’s strategic priorities and marketing, communication and recruitment objectives.

You’ll report to the Manager, Communications and your specific duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Working directly with clients during the creative process to determine project scope, content, objectives, target audience, creative approach, story, tone and delivery mode, and then recommending appropriate media, timelines and production process
  • Identifying visual requirements for the annual content calendar in collaboration with the communications and marketing teams
  • Negotiating differences of opinion on project scope between client and your professional expertise, and/or escalating to management
  • Scouting various locations to prepare for photography and video recordings (e.g. ambient sound, lighting, people traffic, etc.) and reserving spaces as needed
  • Researching technical accuracy considerations for shoots to ensure visuals captured meet relevant safety protocols and professional standards
  • Contributing to storyboard development in consultation with communications specialists and graphic designers and obtaining consensus approvals as appropriate
  • Communicating with participants involved in photo and video shoots – arranging schedules ahead of the shoot; during the shoot, putting subjects at ease and providing artistic direction to them
  • Maintaining all Georgian brand standards in video and photography work
  • Ensuring both collective and/or individual photo/video consents are received and stored as required
  • Confirming all required assets on file before dismissing participants from a shoot
  • Creating compelling, high quality professional videos for use on the college website, social media, broadcast television, and other applications
  • Bringing the Georgian brand to life using the storytelling medium of video and audio
  • Operating camera and setting up lighting, audio gear and teleprompter (as needed); and directing onscreen talent in-studio or on-location
  • Selecting and performing editing and mixing requirements to create final production and developing motion graphics and transitions
  • Using a keen storytelling lens while editing videos to identify the appropriate content for final production
  • Selecting appropriate background music that evokes the emotion the video is trying to convey
  • Seeking final approvals and packaging and delivering final production
  • Capturing compelling photos that document Georgian news and events, and/or highlight key marketable aspects of academic programs and student life, using a range of technical equipment, including cameras, lenses, and lighting
  • Attending college events for the purpose of taking photographs and/or video for internal and external distribution
  • Arranging still-life objects, products, scenes, props and backgrounds
  • Using software such as Adobe Photoshop to import, edit, enhance, frame and output images
  • Preparing and presenting contact sheets to clients and manager
  • Maintaining a comprehensive equipment inventory that is serviced and maintained in good working order
  • Maintaining the college’s digital asset management (DAM) system including uploading and organizing photos; creating and maintaining appropriate photo collections; tagging all images to ensure an intuitive, searchable database; and regularly deleting and refreshing images to keep the database current
  • Liaising with colleagues in IT about the backend function of the DAM, as needed
  • Co-ordinating video archiving and making storage recommendations based on large file sizes
  • Investigating new media production hardware/software to determine availability, performance and compatibility with existing equipment while keeping informed about trends in media production through ongoing professional development
  • Collaborating on the video and photo style guides
  • Researching and recommending third party photographers and videographers for periods of peak volume or off-site locations
  • Ensuring a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging representation in visual media productions
Qualifications:

  • Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in photography, videography, multimedia production or another related field
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in videography and/or photography with a portfolio, and project management experience
  • Advanced user of photography and videography software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Excellent and effective verbal, interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Creative skills and ability to work independently are required
  • Must have good judgement, discretion and diplomacy
  • Strong organizational and project management skills to accommodate multiple projects from concept to completion
  • Ability to travel to other campus locations as required
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends on occasion
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, in inclement weather, in industrial settings on occasion depending on the production needs
