About the role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Taxonomist to spearhead efforts and steer strategy and priorities in uplifting our metadata and taxonomy, from researching & conceiving of new valuable taxonomies, to modeling & implementing structured metadata solutions, to championing metadata & taxonomy standards and execution throughout the organization. The impact of this role will be felt far and wide across the business internally and externally and will enable more innovative and delightful experiences for our users, and growing Envato’s global business.  

**Please note this is a remote role and we are only considering applications based who live in the pacific or mountain timezones and are open to starting your day a little later so there is cross over with our ANZ teams**

About the team

Our content and author team is a large team spread across our 3 global hubs; Australia, Mexico and the US. On the content side, the team is responsible for our content strategy and operations regarding the review and curation of our assets. On the author side they are responsible for everything connected to our authors, including author management, sales and recruitment and the overall engagement of our authors.

We’re in an exciting phase where we’re upgrading our core content platform to support the growing and future needs of the Envato ecosystem, particularly in the creative digital asset space at the heart of Envato’s business. As part of this, we believe there is a massive opportunity to level up our approach to taxonomy and metadata as a core capability, that will help us unlock even more value from our creative asset catalogue and supercharge the value we bring to customers.  We see incredible potential in investing in the underlying metadata and variety of unique characteristics surrounding the creative content on our platform, including possibilities for developing new products and revenue streams in the future. This is where you come in and as our first taxonomist can help us to identify unique opportunities and challenges surrounding our leading breadth of creative digital assets, the scale of our product ecosystem and user base and especially the recent explosion around artificial intelligence and generative AI capabilities.

Responsibilties

  • Scope, create, and maintain comprehensive taxonomies, metadata schemas, and ontologies to support various domains and business requirements
  • Own and steward our taxonomy & metadata cross-functionally, effectively collaborating with stakeholders, including product managers, engineers, data scientists, content strategists, and other relevant teams, to gather requirements and implement taxonomies effectively that drive business, product and customer outcomes
  • Lead taxonomy projects from conception to implementation, including designing classification systems, creating tagging guidelines, and establishing governance processes
  • Evaluate and enhance existing taxonomies and metadata models, making iterative improvements based on user feedback, data analysis, and evolving industry trends
  • Conduct research and analysis to identify user needs, business goals, and industry best practices, ensuring taxonomies align with these factors
  • Collaborate with user research and data analytics teams to test and optimise taxonomies for improved search results, discoverability, and user satisfaction
  • Provide guidance and support to content creators / curators and operational teams to ensure accurate and consistent application of taxonomies and metadata
  • Advocate for the value of taxonomies and structured data across the organisation, promoting their benefits and educating stakeholders on best practices, and achieving buy-in for new taxonomy-related processes and governance policies
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and advancements in information organisation, and incorporate relevant insights into taxonomy strategies
Skills and Experience

  • You live in the pacific or mountain timezones and are open to starting your day a little later so there is cross over with our ANZ teams.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in taxonomy development, information architecture management, data design, or a similar role
  • Experience working on taxonomy for a digital business is a must-have
  • Proficient in designing and managing taxonomies, metadata schemas, and controlled vocabularies
  • Familiarity with industry leading taxonomy management software and tools, including hands-on experience with configuration and implementation at scale
  • Experience with user research and data analysis methodologies to inform taxonomy design and improvements
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Proven analytical/research skills and problem-solving abilities, structuring ambiguous problems clearly, with the ability to translate complex information into intuitive and user-friendly solutions.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain data integrity and quality
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, designers, and data scientists.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, with a roll-up-the-sleeves attitude and strong bias towards action.
