Job Summary:

The Metadata Librarian is charged with creating and enhancing metadata and coordinating cataloging processes at Gleeson Library. This role entails collaboratively working with the Metadata & Collection Management Department’s Library Assistants and student assistants, and close consultation with the Interim Head of Metadata & Collection Management and Associate Dean and various other librarians, staff, and departments to ensure that library resources are discoverable and accessible. This position is directly responsible for original cataloging of all types of library materials, batch loading of electronic resource catalog records using Collection Manager and other vendor platforms, and performing all serials, non-text media and realia cataloging for the library’s general collections. The Metadata Librarian also serves as a resource and training support for library staff and student assistants who perform copy cataloging, and works closely with the E-resources & Systems Department  to ensure records are accurately loaded into the library’s catalog (III Sierra) and discovery (EBSCO EDS) systems. This position reports to the Interim Head of Metadata & Collection Management and Associate Dean for Collection Services. Appointment is at the Assistant Librarian level.

Essential Functions

Cataloging & Metadata Operations (80%):

  • Perform original and copy cataloging of all types and formats of library materials
  • Perform batch loading of electronic resource catalog records
  • Coordinate cataloging workflows for physical and digital resources in various formats and subjects
  • In consultation with the Department Head and Associate Dean, develop and maintain metadata policies, workflows and procedures to meet evolving standards, and user needs
  • Perform catalog maintenance, troubleshooting, and special projects
  • Analyze, create, enrich, and transform metadata in MARC and non-MARC formats
  • Utilize cutting-edge technologies, tools, and automation techniques to optimize metadata quality and efficiency
  • Foster collaboration with other departments to ensure metadata consistency and interoperability across library systems
  • Other duties as assigned
Training and Professional Development (10%):

  • Provide training and instruction on metadata standards and best practices to departmental staff
  • Maintain expertise in metadata standards, digital technologies, and emerging trends
  • Remain abreast of national and international trends, standards, and best practices in metadata and cataloging
  • Actively engage in professional development activities, conferences, and collaborative programs
Strategic Leadership (10%):

  • Provide input on the strategic direction for metadata management and cataloging services
  • Collaborate with library leadership to develop and implement policies, procedures, and workflows
  • Coordinate the day-to-day workflow and policies of cataloging activities within the MCM department
Minimum Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited MLS or MLIS
  • Thorough knowledge of cataloging standards: RDA; MARC21 Format for Bibliographic Data and Authority Data; Library of Congress and Superintendent of Documents classification schemes; Library of Congress name and subject headings (LCNA, LCSH)
  • Direct experience with integrated library systems (ILS) such as Sierra, FOLIO, Alma, or similar platforms as well as bibliographic and cataloging tools such as RDA Toolkit, Classification Web, MarcEdit, OCLC Connexion and other bibliographic databases
  • Demonstrated experience with metadata creation, manipulation, and using and interpreting bibliographic catalog records
  • Familiarity with authority control processes and database maintenance
  • Demonstrated experience or interest in working with diverse groups, cultural humility and ability to support the advancement of DEI initiatives
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences
  • Ability to investigate and solve complex bibliographic problems, work both  independently and collaboratively, and to exercise good judgment
  • Attention to detail, high accuracy, and strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in metadata management, cataloging, or related fields in an academic library setting
  • Familiarity with manipulating and loading records using OCLC Collection Manager or similar utilities
  • Proficiency in analyzing metadata and devising strategic solutions to enhance metadata quality, interoperability, and accessibility
  • Experience supervising staff and coordinating complex library collection-related projects
  • Ability to lead collaborative projects and independently solve complex cataloging and metadata challenges
