The University of Alabama Libraries seeks applications and nominations for an innovative, collaborative, and tech-savvy Head of Metadata and Archival Processing. This position reports to the Director of Resource Acquisition & Discovery and actively contributes to the management of the unit, providing leadership, support, project management, and workflow analysis for a unit of faculty and staff responsible for cataloging, metadata management, and archival processing. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing original, complex and copy cataloging, metadata creation and remediation, and authority control in MARC and BIBFRAME; managing the receiving and processing of incoming GPO and federal depository shipments of materials in all formats using SuDoc classification; and all workflow related to accessioning and processing archival collections, creating finding aids to support discovery, and overseeing the University Libraries archival management software (ArchivesSpace). The unit is also actively engaged in collaborative projects related to Special Collections, Digital Humanities, Scholarly Communications (including Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) and the Institutional Repository), and digital library initiatives which require advanced knowledge of Dublin Core, Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS), Encoded Archival Description (EAD), DACS, and other relevant metadata schemas. This position is committed to overseeing More Product Less Process (MPLP) in all aspects of work.

The University Libraries is a FOLIO beta development partner with EBSCO, and this position plays a major role internally, as well as in the FOLIO community. The position leads testing and implementation for cataloging and metadata workflow and collaborates across the University Libraries regarding functionality and interoperability across various FOLIO applications and data sources. In addition, the position advises on reporting and assessment functions needed in FOLIO for internal and external purposes.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 3 years post-MLS cataloging and metadata experience in a research library.
- At least 1 year supervisory experience with faculty and professional staff, including direct involvement with establishing goals, evaluating employees, developing job descriptions, and analyzing and adjusting workflows.
- Experience with both original and complex cataloging of materials with significant knowledge of and ability to apply cataloging standards (RDA, AACR2, LCSH, LCC, FAST headings, and MARC21 formats) for bibliographic and authority data.
- Experience with bulk importing, exporting, and editing of metadata records.
- Knowledge of linked data and semantic web tools and frameworks such as BIBFRAME, RDF, OWL, SKOS, and SPARQL.
- Knowledge of and experience with tools and services that support cataloging and metadata functions such as OCLC Connexion Client, OCLC WorldShare Management Services, MarcEdit, and library services platforms, etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge of resource description for discovery and access through various technologies.
- Experience manipulating data using Access, Excel, SQL, VBA, OpenRefine, R, or other relevant scripting environments.
- Knowledge of basic preservation strategies for archival collections.
- Experience with archival metadata creation and schemas including but not limited to: DACS, EAD, Dublin Core, etc.
- Experience working with ArchivesSpace or another archival data management system.
- Experience effectively collaborating with diverse stakeholders and communicating with non-technical audiences.
- Experience evaluating cataloging, metadata, and archival processing workflow and creating documentation to improve processes.
- Experience with organizing large-scale projects and project management software solutions.
- Demonstrated commitment to applying More Product, Less Process (MPLP) strategies in research libraries.
- Experience managing and processing GPO and federal depository materials in various formats, including cataloging using SuDoc classifcation.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of the importance of supporting librarians and staff through active personnel management and promotion of diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
- Ability to meet tenure requirements in a research library with a focus on research and publication, as well as a demonstrated research agenda aligned with relevant aspects of the position.
- Five years of recent cataloging/metadata and supervisory experience in an academic or research library.
- Experience with a national cooperative cataloging program such as the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), NACO, BIBCO, CONSER or SACO.
- Knowledge of Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).
- Experience with data migration and data analysis in libraries.
- Knowledge of and experience using metadata schemas and encoding initiatives including XML, Dublin Core, MODS, and TEI and willingness to learn additional ones as needed.
- Experience providing metadata consultation and services related to digital projects, institutional repositories, and ETD’s, etc. that are not managed by the metadata unit.
- Working knowledge of the processes and tools used in library acquisitions, electronic resource management, and knowledge bases.
- Experience establishing workflows and production levels for faculty librarians and staff.
- Experience performing detailed annual evaluations for faculty librarians and staff.
- Experience managing librarians, both tenure and non-tenure track, and staff.
- Experience working with collaborative projects to increase usage of physical and electronic materials by making them more discoverable and accessible.
- Experience cataloging a wide range of print and non-print materials in various formats.
