Overview:

Carries out digitization of library resources in a variety of formats. Maintains digitization equipment, such as flatbed scanners, oversize feeder scanners, and overhead book scanners. Makes necessary adjustments to optimize quality of digitization and performs quality assurance checking. Primary responsibility for post-production processing to crop, colour and white balance, compile scans, OCR, tags, and create file derivatives for accessibility needs and online access.

Representative Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Digitize bound and unbound library resources, including rare books, maps, and archival textual records, photographs, and posters with a focus on rare and fragile materials that require special attention to detail and precise placement of materials on digitization equipment.
  • Interpret conservation reports and identify appropriate digitization equipment based on physical needs of an item and copyright status. Make tailored adjustments to equipment based on the individual needs of each item.
  • Perform quality assurance checking on scans before they are made available to researchers, including those performed by temporary workers.
  • Operate and maintains a variety of digitization equipment.
  • Train short-term staff and volunteers on proper use of digitization equipment.
  • Perform post production processing on scans, including cropping, compiling, white balance and colour correction, optical character recognition (OCR), and others, as required.
  • Digitize materials in support of Library Accessibility Services and performs postproduction on derivatives, scrutinizing processing to support AODA compliance.
  • Calibrate digitization equipment and desktop screens.
  • Participate in digitization selection and material assessment, with the guidance of Manager and librarians.
  • Identify incomplete preparation for digitization and report to supervisor.
  • Developing project procedure manuals and specialized procedures to support Library Accessibility Services, as requested by supervisors.
  • Write a variety of documents including, but not limited to, procedure manuals and documenting deviations from set standards.
  • Set up and maintain filing systems and standardized file naming, both electronic and hard copy.
  • Sort, file, shelve, and retrieve materials in a variety of formats.
  • Attend and participate in meetings.
Supervision:

Ensure adherence to quality standards and procedures for short-term staff and volunteers

Qualifications:

  • 2 year Community College diploma in Information Technology or Digital Photography.
  • Requires 2 years of relevant experience.
