C2PA from the Attacker’s Perspective

In light of the rapid and widespread adoption of AI and the growing threat of deepfakes and misinformation, the industry has been taking steps to introduce mechanisms that aim to provide authenticity and digital provenance.  One such initiative is the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) – an open standard that has the support of Adobe, BBC, Google, Intel and Microsoft.  However, as demonstrated by Dr. Neal Krawetz at the recent IPTC Photo Metadata Conference, the three-legged approach adopted by both the C2PA and CAI – provenance, watermarking and fingerprinting – have been shown to be both insecure and easily circumvented.  His article concludes that the current methods, based on trust and honesty, are easy targets, and as he’s been telling the C2PA for over three years, are not fit for purpose.
