10 Things on the 10th August: Knowledge Graphs, Taxonomies, Subject Headings & Metadata

Tracy Forzaglia, aka Modlibrarian, presents her usual round-up of taxonomy-based articles.  This month’s items include a post by Heather Hedden on Subject Headings vs. Taxonomies, Ahren Lehnert on Thinking like a Graph, and a heads-up that they’ll both be appearing at the upcoming Henry Stewart Semantic Data conference in October.  Additional articles include Annabel Lane on The Metadata Knowledge Graph, a PoolParty taxonomy video on LLMs, and Erik Lee on Content Auditing for Kids.

Anchoring Trust in Visual Content

Visual tech expert Paul Melcher‘s most recent article highlights the growing dilemma in trusting what we see, and how the old adage that “the camera never lies” is no longer valid in an age where images and video can be easily manipulated.  Paul suggests that the key to establishing trust is by focusing on the human source of any given image, and identifying its very first publication, whether it’s part of a brand campaign, an individual’s social media post or a news organisation website.  Paul explains how this first appearance could take the form of an invisible watermark or be embedded in a file’s DNA to serve as a digital pointer that leads back to its origin; however, he also notes that such data would need to be stored outside of metadata as this is far too easy to delete or falsify.

Why Metadata Deserves a Gold Medal at This Year’s Olympics

As the final curtain falls on the Paris Olympics and Tom Cruise thrills us with yet more of his carabiner-based urban shenanigans, this article from Brian Courtney of Salt Flats reminds us about the critical importance of metadata within sporting events.  From in-depth athlete profiles, schedule management and performance statistics through to time stamping media for broadcast synchronisation, tracking the history of world-breaking records, and facilitating fan engagement, metadata allows the Olympics to not only showcase athletics, but to also enrich it with a wealth of contextual stories, facts and figures for the world to enjoy.

Best Practices for Franchise Brand Management Through DAM

This recent post from Digital Asset Management software provider Pica9 takes a look at the challenges associated with maintaining brand consistency across multiple franchise locations, and how a well-organised DAM system can assist in providing a centralised hub for the storage, organisation and distribution of brand-compliant assets.  The post presents nine best-practice tips along with implementation guidance covering brand guidelines, role-based access control, custom template provision, approval workflows, user training and feedback, planning for scalability, and leveraging analytics to identify asset usage and areas for improvement.
