Knowledge in the Age of AI

We are excited to announce that Dr Denny Vrandečić, Head of Special Projects, Wikimedia Foundation, will be giving a talk at the next Informatics Departmental Seminar.

Title: Knowledge in the Age of AI

Abstract: The last few years, large language models have profoundly impacted research and products in many different areas. From applications in health care to the creation of new soda flavors, Artificial Intelligence has captured the imagination of many people. Even though some of the initial enthusiasm and promises of large language models may have been somewhat exaggerated, it is clear that generative AI is a technology that will bring a massive impact that is still difficult to predict.

In many areas, we have invested heavily in knowledge infrastructure, be they structured or unstructured.

• What is the role of these knowledge infrastructures, metadata repositories, and knowledge graphs in this new world?
• How will knowledge representations fit into a world that is being rapidly transformed by the deployment of large language models?
• What about unstructured knowledge bases such as Wikipedia or Reddit?

We will work on some of the answers to how these technologies might evolve and co-evolve. We will explore the weaknesses and strengths of the different approaches, and aim to identify the opportunities where they may complement each other. We dream about what lies ahead for knowledge, and how the advances in language models might allow us to allow more people to reach and contribute to the world's knowledge than ever before.
