Call for Contributions: Metadata, DAM and AI

This month’s editorial theme is Metadata, DAM and AI.  As artificial intelligence technologies increasingly permeate into our everyday workflows and processes, its inquisitive tentacles reach ever further into our data.  When it comes to DAM, by far the most important data is that which sits at the core of all digital assets and allows us to add context, categorise, organise and search: metadata.

Metadata acts as the blueprint and table of contents for a digital asset and can contain not only a visual description and keywords, but also how, where and when the content was created, including camera settings such as focal length, ISO and film speed, location data via GPS coordinates, author and copyright details, and more technical settings such as the software and colour profiles used.

The advent of AI has seen a renewed focus on the importance of metadata.  Visual technology such as facial and image recognition is now capable of automatically generating metadata, tags and keywords by detecting scenes, objects and even sentiment from images, alleviating the traditionally laborious process of manual tagging.  Artifical intelligence can also transcribe audio and video files, saving further time and human resources, and improving the context and discoverability of the asset.

However, as AI in its current state is often regarded as the toddler in the library, human oversight and governance are still recommended in order to avoid costly mistakes due to misinterpretation, the introduction of bias, or the generation of damaging, off-brand descriptors.  The risk of AI running amok appears to be very real, and after a series of embarrassing mishaps that span almost eight years, even tech giants such as Google and Apple are still falling foul of AI’s interpretive ‘quirks’ and inherent bias.

To investigate this topic further, we’re asking our readers and subscribers to share their own stories, strategies and insights on Metadata, DAM and AI.  Do you have any tips for successfully implemented AI-assisted auto-tagging or keywording functionality?  Has your organisation decided to stick with traditional metadata management methods due to concerns surrounding AI’s stability or effectiveness?  Are you using metadata and AI in a more unconventional or playful  way to improve your DAM system’s capabilities, engagement or wow factor?
