Cambridge University Expired
Cambridge, UK

The University Library is seeking to appoint a Digital Library Coordinator with main responsibility for data production, processing and analysis for Cambridge Digital Library, our central platform for digitised content relating to our unique and special collections. The Digital Library has been running since 2011 and contains almost 50,000 items ranging from the papers of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin to manuscript and photograph collections representing the global scope of the Cambridge's physical collections.

The post sits within the Digital Library Unit and plays a key role in technical aspects of digital library work in support of access, research and teaching. Descriptive metadata, transcription and images are essential to the discovery and understanding of the Library's digital assets, and the role-holder will work with colleagues both internal and external to ensure that data can be sourced and/or created in such a way as to promote the widest possible use of the Library's collections. The role-holder will also be responsible for the integration of data workflows with internal Library systems, with large digital humanities projects and with the wider world of digital research.

Core responsibilities will include metadata and image processing, training and support in key standards such as TEI/XML, and promotion of standards and best practice in the digital library sphere. The post holder will be educated to first degree level or similar experience. They will have experience of data formats such as XML and JSON, of metadata standards such as TEI, EAD and MARC, and of appropriate scripting languages such as Python and XSLT. A basic knowledge of digital humanities methodologies and of query languages (SQL, SPARQL) would also be an advantage.

The role is an excellent opportunity to be part of a collaborative team that extends across the University, and to play a part in cutting-edge work at the forefront of digital approaches to special collections. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage in a wide range of technical activities, and to work with specialists across a wide range of fields within the University and beyond.
